LG Front Load Washer Dryer – Major Complaints

LG front load washer dryer

The LG front load washer dryer is a high efficiency unit that works by forcing the water through the clothes rather than swirling the clothes through the water. This is a much better cleaning system for clothes. Additionally, capacity is increased as there is no agitator, the tower in the middle of top load washer. Water usage is decreased as the clothes are weighed and the computer determines the correct amount of water for the load. That being said, there are complaints common to all front load washers.

Leaking and Smell – Bad odors emanating from front load washers are a common complaint. There is a rubber seal in the front of the LG that needs to be cleaned to keep it water tight. The manufacturer recommends after each load or after completing the laundry for the day to wipe the interior door down and then to take clean cloth and wipe the interior seal down making sure to clean out the interior portion of the seal. The seal has a split feature with small holes that can trap lint, hair and allow water to leak out. It is also recommended that you clean the filter for the washer out once a month because it can collect hair, lint and strings from your laundry that can cause odors to be trapped in your washer. This is relatively easy to do on the LG front load washer dryer; the small door on the front of the unit allows easy access to clean out this filter. Running the washer through a rinse cycle with a 1/2 cup of vinegar also will keep any odor at bay.

Bad odors coming out of a LG front load washer dryer can come from using a liquid fabric softener. The only way to stop the smell is to give up the liquid and switch to sheets. You can run your machine with detergent mixed with borax. Then run a cycle with vinegar. If that doesn’t work, wash a few loads of whites with Clorox. As long as you stop the liquid fabric softener and run several of the suggested cleaning cycles, the odor will dissipate and not return. Also, leave your washer door open to dry out after you are done using it for a while. Front loaders are designed to be air tight so the water doesn’t leak out, so if you don’t leave the door open you are going to have mold growth issues.

With heavily soiled and stinky clothes, the clothes do not smell good after coming out washer or the dryer, even after putting on the fabric softener. To solve this issue, press the extra "rinse" button that gives you another rinse cycle.

Regular laundry detergent does not work well in a LG front load washer dryer. If you use regular detergent, in about 2 to 3 weeks your clothes will start smelling of mildew. Just like when you put damp clothes in your clothes drawer before they fully dry. The reason for this is the water trapped with residue from suds generated by the regular laundry powder does not dry and bacteria forms on the tub and seals. Solution, toss out your leftover detergent for your top loader and buy "HE" type laundry detergent. The HE detergent is designed to generate fewer suds.

Vibration – The LG front load washer dryer hub spins at a higher rate than top load washers. This higher spin rate removes more water and gets the clothes closer to being dry. The high spin rate also comes with vibration, making it necessary to install the washer on a solid, level surface. It takes a little time to install LG front load washer dryer, because they are much bigger than traditional washers, and the washer has to be adjusted to sit perfectly level.

The LG has Spinsense to use to reduce the vibration on wood floors. It has been recommended that the best material to use to stabilizer a front loader is a stall mat (sold in horse feed & supply stores) that can be trimmed to fit and is rated to hold over 500lbs and usually gray. The stall mat is highly recommended for front loaders on a second story installation. A friend owns the duet and she says there is no vibration problem with hers, but hers is installed on a concrete surface.

LG Washers and Dryers

LG Washers and Dryers

LG washers and dryers have many features that are new to consumers that have only used conventional top load washers and front load dryers. LG engineers their products to be ergonomic, energy efficient and stylish.
What Are the Differences Between Direct DriveTM and Conventional Washing Machines?
Direct DriveTM washing machines have a powerful and reliable motor that boasts minimized vibration and noise, and reduced energy consumption. Conventional washing machines with belts and pulleys tend to wear out faster due to vibration, and create unpleasant noise and power-loss due to friction.
What Are the Advantages of Direct DriveTM?
With a Direct DriveTM motor, there are fewer moving parts. This means less vibration and noise, increased efficiency, and a decreased chance of breakdown or brush and belt replacement.
What Is Direct DriveTM?
Direct DriveTM is state-of-the-art technology that integrates the washing machine’s motor, belt, and pulley into a single, quiet, and durable mechanism, attached directly to the drum.
How Does Direct DriveTM Technology Work?
A powerful and reliable motor delivers power directly to the drum.
What Are the Benefits of a Large Capacity Washing Machine?
A large capacity washing machine cuts down on the number of loads, while allowing you to wash larger items such as blankets or curtains. Also, with more space, your items will be less wrinkled.
What Is the Advantage of a Large Washing-Machine Door?
With their wide, 30cm porthole and 180º swing doors, LG washing machine doors make it easy to load and unload large items.
What Is the “Intelligent Washing System”?
Once you’ve selected a program and pressed the start button, the Intelligent Washing System detects the load size, selects the water temperature, and determines the optimum water level and cycle time, keeping water and energy consumption to a minimum.
What Is “Shower Spray”?
LG washing machines are equipped with a circulating shower function called Shower Spray. A pump under the drum sprays water from the top during washing and rinsing cycles, to improve detergent dispersion.
A washer dryer provides both washer and dryer functionality in one compact appliance. These cutting-edge, comprehensive laundry units require less energy and water than separate washers and dryers—and they eliminate the need for venting—and create more space in your home.

What Is a Load Sensor?

A load sensor automatically optimizes water-level and wash-time based on the weight and size of each load, for superior washing performance.

Does the LG Washer Dryer Clean Clothes as Well as My Current Washer?

Yes, and often more effectively! The tumbling action of a front-loading washer gently lifts the clothes in and out of the water hundreds of times during the wash cycle. This action cleans and rinses your clothes better than top-loading washers, and is gentler on the fabric. Also, the LG Washer Dryer Combo goes through three rinses during the regular cycle, eliminating any detergent residue that’s ordinarily left in the clothing.

Does a Washer Dryer Operate Differently from a Conventional Washer and/or Dryer?

With a washer dryer, loads are smaller. Washing and drying combined takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, so gear your wash habits accordingly. This could mean washing a load every day or every other day, rather than trying to wash everything in one day. Washer dryers also use a condensation drying system that operates without venting. Therefore, drying times run somewhat longer, but still use only 2/3 the energy of standard venting dryers. For best results, shake and fold—or hang on a clothes hanger right away to avoid wrinkling. Remember, tweak your wash habits, and you'll love your LG Washer Dryer.

How Large of a Load Can an LG Washer Dryer Handle?

LG Washer Dryers are capable of washing about 8kg of dry clothes. For combined wash and dry, they accommodate about 4kg of dry clothes.

Does the LG Washer Dryer Combination need to be vented?

No, LG Washer Dryer Combos have a patented condensation drying system in which hot air is condensed into liquid, and then pumped out via the discharge hose into a regular drain. This also means no humidity is created in the area around the washer dryer unit.

Where Can the LG Combination Washer Dryer Be Installed?

The most important thing is to install your washer dryer in a place that’s most convenient for you. It can be installed in the kitchen, bathroom, living area, laundry room, or closet. The beauty of the LG Washer Dryer Combo is its versatility of installation. With the elimination of humid air-venting, your options are unlimited. As long as you have access to plumbing, a drain, and a standard electrical receptacle, it can be installed anywhere.

What Type of Detergent Should I Use with an LG Washer Dryer?

Low-sudzing detergent, such as powder detergent, works best in washer dryers. While powder is preferable, a low-sudzing liquid detergent works fine too. And because LG washer dryers require only one to two tablespoons, you’ll enjoy a substantial savings on your detergent costs.

Should I Use Fabric Softener in a Washer Dryer?

LG recommends using a fabric softener in our washer dryers, to make the drying cycle more efficient and help avoid wrinkles.

LG Washer Dryers and Energy Efficiency

LG Washer Dryers use 50% less water. This means you’ll save money on your water bill, and your hot-water heater will use less energy—both of which will save money on your electricity bill.

Can I Open the Unit During the Drying Cycle?

With wash-only cycles, you can remove items only after the cycle is complete. To dry all or part of the washed load, simply set the desired cycle and press start. At that point, the door cannot be opened again until the cycle is complete.

Does it require any special wiring?

No. The LG Washer/Dryer Combo uses 115 volt,15 amp standard wiring.

Can it be raised off the floor?

Yes, as long as the base is level, and is of very sturdy construction.

How long does it take to wash and dry a load of clothes?

The amount of time it takes to wash and dry a load of clothes depends on the type and size of the load (delicates, permanent press, or cottons). The average combined wash-and-dry time is 2 1/2 to 3 hours. This approximates the total time it takes to both wash and dry a comparable load of clothing in a separate washer and dryer system.
LG Steam Direct DriveTM washing machines are designed to make efficient use of water, and reduce energy consumption. They exceed the Energy Saving Trust®’s recommended standards for energy-efficient consumer products.

Steam Direct Drive™ washing machines have an extra-large capacity, letting you do more laundry in fewer loads. Combine that with steam technology that also reduces water and energy use, and you’re talking about a 51% reduction in electricity consumption, and a 44% reduction in water consumption, compared to standard washers.

Why save water?

Due to our ever-growing population—both in the United Kingdom and around the world—demands on our water resources have increased. Reduce your household’s water waste—without reducing your activities or relied-on services—by installing high-efficiency appliances that can cut indoor water use by about 30%. You’ll also see a substantial savings on your water and energy bills.
From the Energy Saving Trust® website:
“Did you know that switching to an Energy Saving Recommended washing machine could cut your energy consumption by up to a third compared to an old washing machine? It can also save you up to £11 a year on your electricity bills and 45 kilograms of CO2.”
The innovative LG Steam Direct DriveTM uses real steam to deliver cleaning performance that’s superior to water alone.

Steam penetrates more effectively than water. It’s surprisingly simple. Steam molecules are smaller, hotter, and more active than water, which means they get between fibres and dissolve dirt, remove odors, and eliminate allergens. Steam also takes less time to do a better job because it reaches higher temperatures more quickly.

What Is Direct DriveTM?

Direct DriveTM is state-of-the-art technology that integrates the washing machine’s motor, belt, and pulley into a single, quiet, and durable mechanism, attached directly to the drum.

What Is Steam Technology?

LG’s revolutionary Steam Technology uses a real steam generator to convert water into steam, which is then fed into the top of the drum through a patented spray nozzle. Steam then penetrates fabrics for enhanced cleaning performance, resulting in brighter whites and more vibrant colors.

What Is the Medic Rinse Cycle?

The ingenious LG Medic Rinse cycle, which was given the British Allergy Foundation’s Seal of Approval, removes 99.8% or more of household dust mites and animal dander.

What Is the Steam Refresh Cycle?

The LG Steam Refresh cycle uses real steam to virtually eliminate wrinkles and odors, making your fabrics look fresh and new in just 20 minutes. Steam Refresh is perfect for bringing lightly worn clothes back to life at the end of the day, or for fluffing and refreshing towels and comforters.

What Is a Load Sensor?

A Load Sensor is a sensor found in LG washer machines that is specially designed to ensure optimal washing and rinsing performance by automatically adjusting wash-and-rinse cycle times, depending on the size of the load.

What Are Designer Colors?

Steam Direct DriveTM washing machines are available in white, silver, and black—a variety of options to match your décor.

What Is Ultra-Capacity?

Choose the drum size to fit your lifestyle. Ultra-capacity helps you wash more clothes in fewer loads.
LG Dryers
Design plays a critical role in harmonizing technology and human needs. In an effort to predict emerging needs and deliver innovative products to the public, LG has developed a comprehensive design philosophy that boils down to four basic elements: concept, style, interface, and finish. At LG, we strive to make your home life easier and more enjoyable by creating digital appliances that fit your lifestyle and home décor.

Design That Integrates Sensitive Ergonomics and Digital Technology

In this era of digital technology, LG has been delving deeply into design and research. Our design team is focused on creating digital appliances that make life easier and more fun.

Digital technology is becoming an increasingly important tool in our modern lives. A growing number of products come equipped with “intelligent” microchips and networking options. This technology, though still in its early stages, has great potential—requiring our designers to put on their “inventing caps” to predict emerging trends, design new lifestyle concepts, and test out their designs on a demanding public.

Designing for the Future

At the LG Life Soft Research Lab, established almost 20 years ago, researchers, designers, and trend scouts work to predict the future by examining and identifying consumer desires; observing the public’s interest in products; and developing design concepts and solutions based on this research.

This is how LG stays one step ahead of the game—we’re always working on products for the future. Our research is focused not only on new products and technological trends, but also on understanding customer and market behavior.

LG Dryer Designs

You can see the LG Design Philosophy at work in our full range of dryers. Sensor Dry technology—and an efficient tumble dry—are designed to fit every household’s unique needs. Simple, easy-to-read controls make doing the laundry a breeze. Their integrated electronic controls, compact designs, range of finishes, and ultra-large capacity blend seamlessly with the aesthetic of your home.

LG Stackable Washer Dryer

The LG stackable washer dryer is stylish with a stainless steel drum and a chrome-rimmed round glass door. There are plenty of control options for how you wash and dry a load of laundry. Wash cycles include cotton/towels, normal, permanent press, delicates, hand wash, and speed wash. Nine wash options include prewash, quick cycle, rinse and spin, extra rinse, and a stain cycle. Five soil settings on the machine and a sanitary cycle that heats the water to 158 degrees help remove the heaviest dirt and grease.

Five spin speeds, including high, medium, low, and extra high spin speed spins clothes at 1,100rpms provide even more options.

A SenseClean system adjusts the water level and wash time determined by the load size and weight.

Convenient electronic controls with an easy to read LED display are on the front. You get alerts when your wash is done and a timer feature lets you delay a cycle for up to 19 hours.

LG stackable washer dryer models include features like a child lock and LoDecibel sound reduction. A four-tray dispenser dispenses detergents for prewash, wash, bleach, and fabric softener.

LG stackable washer dryers can be stacked under a counter or side by side. For added convenience, the height can be adjusted with an optional 13 inch pedestal with built in storage drawers.

Review:

The Pros:

1. Low water user: I cannot believe how little water this thing uses. I'd never seen a front loader in action before but instead of an entire basin filling with water if you can imagine it's almost like there are a bunch of tiny "water guns" circling the rim that occasionally shoot some water out on the clothes.
2. Easy to load laundry treatment tray: There is a spot for detergent, another for bleach, another for fabric softener, and one extra spot that I put a little Borax in. All this is in a tiny "drawer" that opens and closes at the top of the machine.
3. Adjusts water levels by laundry weight: It spins the clothes for about a minute to automatically determine what the load size is and adjusts the water level accordingly.

4. Lots of cleaning options: There are TONS of different wash and rinse combinations. Most take at least an hour to do but they also have a "speed wash" that took 20 minutes from start to finish. I used this cycle once after my wife had an allergic reaction to a new shower soap we tried. Some of the allergens were in the sheets but they weren't soiled or dirty and consequently that option came in very useful.
5. High RPM spin cycle: It has INCREDIBLY FAST spin cycles that get the clothes a lot closer to dry which means less dryer time.

6. Low noise: I think it's pretty quiet although we have it in our basement so that's not a critical issue.
7. Child safety lock: There's a child lock button you can press so that if you have small children that think it's fun to press all the different lighted flashing buttons they can do so to their hearts content without messing up your washing instructions.

The CONS: (I should point out that these have to do with ALL Front Loaders and nothing really specific to the LG).
1. LG Prices: First and foremost THE PRICE. We paid just under $1000 for the washer itself. When I was leaving Sears I noticed that most of the top loaders were less than $500. True our utility bills will be less but it'll be quite a while before we make up that loss.

2. Repair worries: These washers have so many bells and whistles that they all now have little computers instead of just some simple knobs. To me I worry that there is now a lot more that can go wrong with them and might be costly to repair but before buying a front loader I checked with our repair guy who said to date they haven't really had any problems with them.
3. No pause feature: Once you hit "start" you're committed. Unlike the top loader that will allow you to add a few more clothes that you might have forgotten - this one locks the front door after you hit start and won't unlock until its done spinning.

All in all the only major complaint so far about LG stackable washer dryer is price. The LG does a great job of cleaning clothes at a fraction of the cost our old unit did.
